
Abrasion Resistance Resistance of a heat shrinkable sleeve or tape to abrasion.
Anode An electrode at which oxidation of its surface or some component of the solution is occurring.

Backfill Material placed in a ditch to cover an exposed pipeline.
Backing The component of a heat-shrinkable sleeve upon which
the adhesive is applied.
Caliper An instrument used to measure coating thickness. Expressed in one-thousandths of an inch (English units) or Millimeters (Metric units).

Casing Seal A devise used to seal the ends of cased pipe from water penetration. Casing seals also prevent hot wax injected between the casing and the carrier pipe from leaking out of the annulus during installation.
Cathodic Disbondment The destruction of the adhesive force between a coating and the surface coated by products of polarization due to cathodic protection.
Cathodic Protection A technique to reduce the corrosion rate of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electro-chemical cell.
Closure Seal A strip of cross-linked, polyethylene, designed
to hold a wraparound sleeve together during the shrinking process (the
polyethylene may be coated with an adhesive).
Conformability The ability of a heat-shrinkable sleeve to fit
snugly or make total contact with the surface of an irregular
shaped object without creasing or folding.
Creep The ability of a material to resist movement under resistance pressure.
Cutback The area from the weld seam on a field joint to the leading edge of the mill applied coating.
Elastic Memory The ability of a heat-shrinkable
sleeve to return to its original size after heat
has been applied.
Elastomer Any one of a family of materials of both natural or synthetic origin, which possesses rubber-like characteristics.
Elongation The amount of stretch in a strip of material, measured
under controlled conditions. The amount of stretch
at the point of break is expressed in percentage.
Galvanic Cell A cell in which chemical change is the source of electric energy. It usually consists of two dissimilar conductors in contact with each other and with an electrolyte, or two similar conductors in contact with each other and with dissimilar electrolytes.
General Corrosion A form of deterioration that is distributed more or less uniformly over a surface.
GTS Global Transmission Sleeves (GTS-65, GTS-80, GTS-HT, GTS-PP)
for corrosion protection and sealing of pipelines.
HBE A family of 2-component liquid epoxies
for the corrosion protection of pipelines.
High Shrink Sleeves Heat-shrinkable, corrosion protection and sealing sleeves for high profile (flanges, couplings, tytons, etc) joints.
Holiday A discontinuity of a coating that exposes the metal surface
to the environment.
Holiday Detector Device used to detect areas of the pipe which are not being protected by a coating.
Hot Melt Adhesives A family of adhesives based on semi-crystalline
polymers characterized by very high shear strengths and often high peel
strengths.
Impact Resistance The resistance of a heat-shrinkable
sleeve to break when a sudden dynamic force is applied.
Layflat Length The length a wraparound sleeve must be cut to in order for it to fit a specific diameter pipe.
Mastic Pour (also called 'MARINE MASTIC
POUR', OR 'HOT POUR') application of a molten (375°F - 400°F) mastic
in the field joint annulus of a concrete coated pipe usually on a lay
barge. The joint protection method chosen must be able to withstand
these extreme temperatures.
Mastics (Also called 'SEALANTS') A family of adhesives based on
butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, synthetic rubbers, and asphalts. Mastics
are amorphous, pressure sensitive, and tacky, so they bond easily to
substrates upon contact and pressure.
Moisture Resistance The resistance of a heat-shrinkable sleeve
of the passage or the absorption of moisture, or to
the harmful affects of moisture.
Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate A test by which the weight of
water vapor transmission through a heat-shrinkable
sleeve is measured in grams per hundred square inches
per 24 hours.
Offshore Sleeves Heat-shrinkable, girth-weld
corrosion protection and sealing sleeves for subsea
pipelines.
Penetration Resistance A heat-shrinkable
sleeve's ability to withstand high pressure on a
small area for a period of time without puncturing.
Pipeline Repair Products Heat-activated patches, melt-sticks and fillers for mainline coating repairs.
Rehab Sleeves A family of heat-shrinkable,
corrosion protection sleeves for the rehabilitation
of existing pipelines.
Release Liner A paper or plastic sheet affixed to the adhesive for protection during handling and storage. It is removed and discarded before application. Sometimes called a 'LINER'.
Salt Crock Test A test which measures the amount of disbondment which occurs on a coating in a salt solution which has electricity passing through it.
Shear Strength The resistance of a heat-shrinkable sleeve to shearing
when a
load is applied along the plane of the sleeve.
Solvent Resistance The resistance of a backing or adhesive to
dissolving in an organic solvent or soils containing such solvents.
Stabilizer A chemical added to prolong the life of a material, such as a stabilizer added to a polyethylene backing which enables the backing to resist the deteriorating effects of ultraviolet light.
Superseal A family of heat-shrinkable, sealing sleeves for the jacket pipe continuation of pre-insulated pipes.
SuperCase A family of heat-shrinkable, casings for the jacket pipe continuation of pre-insulated pipes.
TBK A family of multi-component product kits for the corrosion protection of girth-welds of directionally drilled pipelines.
Thermal Expansion The increase in dimension which occurs when the temperature of a material is increased.
Tolerance The limits of variability that are allowed around a standard test value.
Tubular Sleeve A heat shrinkable sleeve extruded in one continuous length for a specific size pipe. Having no seam, the
sleeve must be slipped onto the pipe before the weld is made.
Ultraviolet Resistance The resistance of
a heat-shrinkable sleeve to degradation by ultraviolet
light, such as that found in sunlight.
Visco-Elastics describes the
nature of polymers and adhesives that exhibit
both viscous and elastic properties.
Water Vapour Transmission The amount
of water vapour that a material will allow to
pass through it in a given amount of time.
Wrapid Sleeve A family of one-piece, wraparound, heat-shrinkable
products with pre-attached closure seals result in optimum installation.
Wrapid Tape A family of primerless, heat-shrinkable tapes
for the corrosion protection and sealing of pipelines.
WrapidSeal A heat-shrinkable, sleeve system for the encapsulation
of manholes.
